Noel Whelan insists Roberto Martinez would be a fantastic appointment as the new Tottenham boss.

The former Leeds United striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider, claimed Martinez could handle the big personalities in the Spurs dressing room.

Last month (April 20), Football Insider revealed Tottenham have placed Martinez on their shortlist to replace Jose Mourinho.

Spurs will also attempt to lure Brendan Rodgers from Leicester City and whispers are growing of their strong interest in Fulham boss Scott Parker.

Martinez, 47, has been the manager of Belgium since 2016 after he was sacked by Everton earlier that year.

Whelan insists Martinez would be a good fit for Spurs and a welcome return to the Premier League.

When asked if going to Spurs would be a good move for Martinez, Whelan told Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, “Absolutely.

“Like Brendan Rodgers, Martinez is one of those managers who you want to play for.

“He’s got a great personality and he’s very intelligent. He’s a man manager and that’s important these days.

“He knows how to look after big personalities and he’s done that with Belgium. It’s not an easy job when you’ve got that many superstars in the national side.

“If they can get him over the line it would be a welcome return to the Premier League. I think everyone would thrive under him.

“He’d be a fantastic appointment.”

Martinez has previously managed Wigan and guided them to shock FA Cup success in 2013.

Ryan Mason remains in charge of Tottenham with four games of their Premier League season remaining.
