Martin Zubimendi wrestling with Liverpool decision but ‘feeling’ is in one direction

Real Sociedad midfielder Martin Zubimendi has received plenty of interest from big clubs beforehand, but for the first time, it looks as if he might actually leave Donostia-San Sebastian. In previous cases, the big obstacle has been his willingness to move, and while before he had categorically ruled it out, now things look a little difficult.

Fabrizio Romano explained on Friday afternoon that Zubimendi is ‘really tempted’ by Liverpool and that he sees it as the ‘opportunity of a lifetime’. However at the same time, Real Sociedad are pushing hard to keep him, and are willing to offer him a new deal if he does stay.

Matteo Moretto has now told Football España, referencing information first revealed by Relevo, that the feeling is that Zubimendi could move. As he wrestles with the decision, at times it looks as if he will leave, and others he reconsiders the idea. The big difference is that Zubimendi has fulfilled his dream of playing Champions League football for Real Sociedad, and is wondering if now is the time to take a step forward in his career.

The 25-year-old’s exit would come as something of a surprise were it to go through. Few saw Zubimendi leaving the club this summer, but Liverpool merely need the green light from the player, as he has a €60m release clause. With the likes of Bayern Munich, Juventus, Arsenal and Barcelona all showing interest in previous summers, his signing would be a coup for Arne Slot.
