Espanyol will be delighted to be back in La Liga again this season, but they will face the season without their top goalscorer in Segunda. Martin Braithwaite executed a clause in his contract that meant he could leave the club for free in the aftermath of their play-off Segunda win.
The Danish forward has signed with Gremio in Brazil, rather than remain in Europe. Heavily linked with Olympiakos earlier in the summer, Braithwaite has decided to try a completely new experience with Gremio.
Just his second season at the RCDE Stadium, Braithwaite scored 22 times and was a key player in their promotion push, but Gremio say they have agreed terms with him.
Espanyol manager Manolo Gonzalez will no doubt want a new forward to help fill some of the gap left by Braithwaite. It will be the first time that Braithwaite has played outside of Europe in his career.
