Marten de Roon’s place in the Dutch squad for Euro 2024 could be in jeopardy following an injury he sustained during the Coppa Italia Final against Juventus yesterday evening. The 33-year-old only lasted 65 minutes before having to be taken off, with head coach Gian Piero Gasperini stating afterwards that he believes the season is over for his captain.
The Dutch side will have to wait and see whether he will be able to join up with the Oranje for the tournament in Germany this summer. With over 40 caps and in his mid 30s, de Roon’s chances of playing in another European championships is likely quite slim.
De Roon has been a permanent fixture for Gasperini and his Atalanta side for almost a decade, with over 300 appearances and 17 goals. So far this season he has played 30 matches and provided five assists. His versatility is a great asset at both club and international level, with the ability to play as a central midfielder or central defender.
