Marseille spoiled their own party in frustrating fashion on Saturday night. For Les Phocéens’ last home game of the season, the Igor Tudor-led side have fell 2-1 against Brest, who had secured their future in Ligue 1 last Sunday. This week, the Marseille faithful had celebrated the 30th anniversary of their Champions League win title against AC Milan, in style. However, the players were unable to return the favour, losing to the Bretons.

Marseille skipper Valentin Rongier (28) was left fuming by his side’s performance. “We’ve let everyone down, and it is not the first time that happened at home this season“, said the FC Nantes youth product to beIN Sports. “It’s not normal.” Marseille have now lost back-to-back league games and are certain to finish third, behind RC Lens. Les Phocéens would need to go win in two qualifying rounds to reach the Champions League group stage.

It’s a sour end to a season of a great hope for Marseille. “Our fans have been perfect all season“, adds an affected and angry Rongier. “They set the town alight for the 30-year anniversary of the Champions League title, and we were not even able to get a win. We had no right to do that.” Marseille will end the season at Ligue 2-bound Ajaccio. It may be Tudor’s last game in the Marseille dugout with rumours of a departure gathering pace.
