Quentin Merlin’s (22) appearances for Olympique de Marseille have caught the eye of France manager Didier Deschamps, according to report from La Provence.
The FC Nantes academy product has played eight games this season for OM, scoring one goal and registering one assist. That goal came against Lille OSC at the weekend and was his first since making the move to Les Phocéens just under one year ago. Since arriving, Merlin has established himself as the first-choice left-back at the Vélodrome.
Descahmps is an admirer, according to La Provence. The competition for a place is not as dense at left-back as it is in other positions in the France set-up. There are the Hernández brothers, Lucas and Théo, Aston Villa’s Lucas Digne, and Real Madrid’s Ferland Mendy. Despite impressing at club level, the latter has never managed to consolidate a place in the France set-up and he seemingly is not in Deschamps’ plans.
The France manager is, however, following Merlin with a view to a future call-up. Deschamps likes the OM full-back’s versatility and ability to play in a back four or a back five.
