Marseille coach Igor Tudor has announced on Friday he would carry on to the second year of his contract with Les Phocéens. The former Hellas Verona coach had put pen to paper over a two-year deal last summer when he replaced Jorge Sampaoli. However, a first full season in the Marseille dugout looks to have taken its toll on the former Juventus centre-back. “A season here is worth two or three seasons in another club“, the Croatian said in his final press conference.

According to L’Equipe and RMC Sport, Tudor has resigned from his position, which means he is not due a severance package. “It was an honor to work for the club, for this family with supporters of the kind you so rarely find. On a personal level, I have grown. I leave the club in a better position than thee one I found it in.” Tudor spoke of “private and professional reasons” to justify his departure. The Croatian boss assessed that he gave his absolute all to Marseille, highlighting the many sleepless nights he had this season.

The 45-year-old manager has heaped praise on Ligue 1. “I thoroughly appreciated France, the supporters and the good wine. The French league is good, with a good pace.” Tudor believes that Marseille now possess a strong platform for the future, and hopes that silverware will shortly return to the Vélodrome. The Croatian’s final game in the Marseille dugout will take place Saturday night, with Les Phocéens’ away game at Ligue 2-bound Ajaccio.
