Marseille were stunned by tenth-placed Ligue 2 side Annecy in the Coupe de France quarter-finals on Wednesday evening. Les Phocéens were beaten 7-6 in the penalty shoot-out by the Savoy outfit, with centre-back Leonardo Balerdi missing the last attempt. For Marseille, it is another crushing blow at home, three days after being humbled 3-0 by PSG in Le Classique, and are on course for another trophyless season. Marseille were the overwhelming favourites of the cup after eliminating strong sides in the previous rounds, as Croatian manager Igor Tudor pointed out to L’Equipe. We’re out of a competition after eliminating Rennes and PSG, it’s madness. We’re massively disappointed, massively sad.”

The former Juventus player said he could not explain the evening’s outcome and did not think that his players had underestimated their opponents. “Annecy played a great game, at a level that I never imagined for a Ligue 2 side. On our side, everything that could go wrong has gone wrong.” Tudor has described the two goals his side had conceded as not justifiable and lamented the lack of ruthlessness from his attacking players. Marseille now need to pick themselves up as they travel away at Rennes this Sunday evening for Ligue 1 gameweek 26.
