According to a financial report from L’Équipe, Chancel Mbemba (30) is being paid €270,000 by Olympique de Marseille, even though the Congolese defender has not played a minute of club football for the team this season.
Over the summer, Marseille took drastic actions to reduce their wage bill and create a more competitive squad. The team sold several high earners at the club, including Jordan Veretout, Jonathan Clauss, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.
However, this change was not always a smooth transition. Some players like Samuel Gigot, Veretout, and Mbemba were placed in the ‘loft’ as the club awaited transfers. Almost all the players that were placed in the ‘loft’ were sold, except Mbemba.
Despite returning to first-team training, in part due to legal reasons, Roberto De Zebri has been vocal that Mbemba has no part to play in the club’s season, and the centre-back has not even been included as part of a matchday squad. The defender has still represented his national team.
This situation has been fraught, like when he was suspended for a training incident, but it is rapidly reaching an end. Mbemba will be out of contract in June.
