Marseille have been left unhappy by the city mayor’s criticism of Manchester United attacker Mason Greenwood, which has put the transfer in jeopardy.

The French giants have a deal in place to sign Greenwood from Manchester United for a €27.6m fixed fee and €4m in add-ons, plus a large share of any future sale.

Marseille were in talks with Greenwood and his entourage to work out personal terms until the negotiations hit an obstacle in the form of the city’s mayor, Benoit Payan.

His criticism of Marseille’s attempts to sign the forward has led the Manchester United man to hit pause on the talks.

According to French daily La Provence (via Le 10 Sport), the French giants are unhappy at the way Payan has inserted himself into the club’s business.

They are not happy that the Marseille mayor’s public statements could mean that the club could lose out on a top target.

Marseille are still in contact with Greenwood and his representatives and recently held a meeting with his father.

They are working on convincing the forward to move to Marseille despite opposition from Payan and a section of the club’s fanbase.
