Paris Saint-Germain’s club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi had billed the club’s European efforts as a campaign that would represent France. If it was meant to be received as a call for unity then some quarters of the nation were unwilling to hear it.
Olympique de Marseille supporters took great pleasure in seeing their eternal rivals eliminated from the Champions League semi-finals by Borussia Dortmund. Marseille were quick to remind the capital that their record as the only French team to win Europe’s most prestigious tournament would remain intact.
Marseille fans and ex-players took to Twitter to gloat over PSG’s misfortune. The retired French footballer and former Olympian striker, Marc Libbra, posted a picture on his social media of Marseille lifting the famous trophy with the caption “Goodnight to all.” While one Marseille supporter created a collage of headlines from PSG’s European exits.
