Marseille right-back Jonathan Clauss (31) will “almost certainly” earn a call-up by France manager Didier Deschamps for the upcoming international break, according to a report this Wednesday from Le Parisien.

The former RC Lens player earned a first international cap last year when Deschamps was trialing a 3-man defense, with Clauss fielded as a right-sided wing-back. The France manager eventually reversed to a more traditional 4-man defense for the 2022 World Cup, meaning Clauss did not fly away to Qatar with Deschamps sticking with Benjamin Pavard and Jules Koundé as right-backs.

Given the Inter Milan and FC Barcelona players are not playing as right-back for their respective clubs, the right defensive flank has been France’s weak link for a while now. Clauss’ call-up may be Deschamps’ answer to it. Although Le Parisien understands that neither Koundé nor Pavard would be dropped from the upcoming France squad.

And with the expected return of Liverpool’s Ibrahima Konaté to the fray, two of the centre-backs previously called up by Deschamps are set to miss out. The first one is expected to be Nice’s Jean-Clair Todibo and the other one would be either Arsenal’s William Saliba or Chelsea’a Axel Disasi, according to the outlet.

France will face The Netherlands at Amsterdam as part of their campaign to qualify for the Euro 2024 on Friday October 13. Les Bleus will host Scotland for a friendly at Lille four days later.
