Olympique de Marseille have already been very active in the transfer window. Igor Paixão has arrived for big money from Feyenoord, whilst Facundo Medina has also signed from RC Lens.

However, Marseille have also shown themselves particularly attentive to the free agent market. Angel Gomes came in for free following the expiry of his deal at Lille OSC; fellow Englishman CJ Egan-Riley also came in, following the expiry of his deal at Burnley; and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang cut his deal in Saudi Arabia short to return to the Vélodrome, one year after departing.

It may not finish there. Speaking to the new broadcaster of the French top-flight, Ligue1+, the club’s sporting director, Medhi Benatia, revealed his plans for the end of the window. “There are one or two positions that we want to strengthen… a left-back, maybe a centre-back. We are thinking about a midfielder, too,” he began.

The Moroccan then added, “But we don’t have an unlimited budget. We are looking at market opportunities.” That interview came before Les Phocéens’ opening day defeat to Stade Rennais (1-0), a result which may further tempt OM to dip back into the market over the next fortnight.
