Marseille deny reaching agreement with Marcelo Gallardo

Although this week’s reports indicate that Marcelo Gallardo is the favourite to take over as Marseille manager this summer, today’s rumours of an agreement having been reached with the Argentine are untrue, the club has told RMC Sport.

The former midfielder, who is now a free agent after eight trophy-laden years at River Plate, is reportedly one of several candidates being looked at by Ligue 1’s third-place finishers.

Lille’s Paulo Fonseca has also been linked – with the Portuguese coach’s entourage confirming OM’s interest, but insisting that the ex-Roma and Shakhtar Donetsk manager is happy to stay in the north of France.

Gallardo ostensibly remains Marseille’s first choice, and a final offer is said to have been put forward to the former Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain player – but the 47-year-old is biding his time. Should he accept the proposal, he will become the third Argentine to manage the club in the last few years, after Marcelo Bielsa and Jorge Sampaoli.
