Marseille were looking to make it three wins in seven days and confirm their revival after beating both ESTAC Troyes and FC Nantes by a 1-0 margin over the last week. Coach Jorge Sampaoli named the same starting line-up as that which took to the field in midweek, meaning Arkadiusz Milik was again left on the bench as Gerson and Dimitri Payet teamed up in attack, and that decision appeared to have paid off as the latter two combined for the opening goal in the 29th minute, just as they had done in Nantes. Gerson played a one-two with Payet and burst into the box before firing high into the net for his second goal in as many matches.

The home side were good value for their half-time lead, but this game changed as Brest won a penalty shortly after the restart when Boubacar Kamara blocked a Hugo Magnetti shot with his arms in the area. Referee Gaël Angoula, a former Ligue 1 player taking charge of a top-flight game for the first time after would-be whistler Antony Gautier pulled out injured, pointed to the spot. Romain Faivre, who got the winner against AS Saint-Etienne from the spot in midweek, made no mistake from 12 yards (53’).

Mattéo Guendouzi missed a good chance to restore Marseille’s lead in the 65th minute when he fired wide from a Pol Lirola centre, and instead it was Brest who went in front with 20 minutes remaining. Franck Honorat cut in from the left and exchanged passes with Jérémy Le Douaron before crashing a shot into the net off the underside of the bar from just inside the area. Marseille sent on Milik for the closing stages but they could not get an equaliser.

THE PLAYER: Franck Honorat

Honorat’s brilliant winner was his fifth goal of the season and it was a sweet moment for a player who was born not far along the Mediterranean coast from Marseille in the city of Toulon. His strike showcased Brest’s array of attacking talent after they were forced to do without usual centre-forward Steve Mounié here. The Benin international was a late withdrawal from the squad with a stomach bug.

THE STAT: 6

Having failed to win any of their first 11 games this season, Michel Der Zakarian’s Brest have now won six in a row for the first time in their top-flight history. They had never previously beaten Marseille at the Vélodrome.
