Olympique de Marseille 2-1 LOSC Lille
THE MATCH
OM coach Igor Tudor rang the changes with this game falling in between his side’s first two UEFA Champions League matches, and Sánchez was one of six players who started here having not been in the line-up for the 2-0 defeat at the hands of Tottenham Hotspur. Despite the fresh legs, Marseille fell behind in the 12th minute as Lille silenced a raucous Orange Vélodrome. The visitors sprung forward on the break after Bafodé Diakité had robbed possession on halfway. Adam Ounas hit the post, but Brazilian full-back Ismaily scored the rebound.
However, Marseille were soon back level as Amine Harit drove forward and laid the ball out to Cengiz Ünder, with the Turkish international’s low centre from the right being turned in by Sánchez from close range (26’).
OM coach Igor Tudor raised eyebrows moments after that when he took off Leonardo Balerdi with the Argentine defender being replaced by Nuno Tavares after a difficult start to the game.
It was another Marseille defender who scored the winning goal just after the hour mark, with an Ünder free-kick delivery from the left being helped on by Sead Kolašinac for Samuel Gigot to score his first goal since moving to the Vélodrome from Spartak Moscow.
Marseille are keeping pace with PSG at the top, with six wins and a draw each after seven games. Only a superior goal difference has the capital club top for now.
THE PLAYER: Alexis Sánchez
The Chilean will have been deeply frustrated at having to miss his new club’s Champions League defeat away to Tottenham in midweek due to a suspension carried over from last season when he was playing for Inter Milan. He returned to the starting line-up here and scored the equaliser, the goal his fourth in his last four appearances.
THE STAT: 19
Marseille’s points tally after seven games is their highest tally ever at this stage of a campaign.
