Marseille have confirmed the appointment of Gennaro Gattuso as their new head coach.

The 45-year-old has been a free agent since leaving LaLiga side Valencia at the start of 2023 having also had spells in charge of Serie A giants Milan and Napoli.

Marseille were forced into making a managerial change after Marcelino quit last week after just seven games in charge amid alleged tensions between fan representatives of the club and the president Pablo Longoria.

Longoria had considered leaving the club before deciding to remain but his close ally Marcelino left leaving the Stade Vélodrome in chaos.

Gattuso arrives with an incredible pedigree from his player where he helped Italy win the World Cup in 2006 as well as winning the Champions League twice with Milan.

As a manager he guided Napoli to the Coppa Italia in 2019 but left Valencia last season with the club fighting to stay in the league.

Marseille find themselves in eighth position in Ligue 1 following a 4-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday.
