Arsenal‘s young Brazilian winger’s loan move to Fluminense might not be just a temporary switch, as reports suggest it could lead to a permanent goodbye.

Fluminense are said to be close to finalising a deal with the Gunners for Marquinhos, and according to Globo Esporte, the agreement includes an “option to buy” clause. It’s not just a free loan either, as Fluminense will pay Arsenal a fee for the loan spell, though the exact amount remains undisclosed.

Marquinhos is currently competing in the pre-Olympic tournament with Brazil’s U23 team. Once the tournament concludes on February 11th, he’ll head to Europe to handle “bureaucratic matters” before officially signing for Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro.

Arsenal forked out €3.5 million to sign Marquinhos from São Paulo in 2022. He made a handful of appearances in his first season but was later sent on loan spells to Norwich City and Nantes. With just six appearances for the Gunners under his belt, this loan to Fluminense could be a permanent farewell, especially if he impresses in his home country.

This pre-Olympic tournament actually played a part in Marquinhos‘ earlier recall from Nantes. The Ligue 1 club initially signed him on a season-long loan but disagreed with his call-up for the tournament. With the competition running from January 20th to February 11th, it meant another four weeks away from Nantes, on top of the time he already missed for the Pan American Games in November. Understandably, the French club weren’t keen on another temporary absence.

Fluminense, however, may be more flexible when it comes to international commitments. And while a loan offers him playing time closer to home, it also raises questions about whether Arsenal see him as part of their long-term plans. Only time will tell if this move paves the way for a permanent departure or simply serves as a stepping stone in his young career.
