Former German international Markus Babbel has criticised the Bundesliga for its timid, defensive style of play.

Babbel played for Bayern Munich, Hamburg and Stuttgart during his playing days, and recently became head coach of A-League side Western Sydney Wanderers.

And the 45-year-old believes that if German football is going to improve, Bundesliga clubs need to take more risks on the field.

“That’s scaredy-cat football, which is not a bit entertaining,” the ex-Liverpool defender told Sportingbet.

“Quite generally there has to be a rethink in the Bundesliga, and in many games I would like more dominance, more greed for the ball.

“Often it is only about the result and not a nice game.

“As long as you get the three points, everything is fine, but if you play beautiful football and lose you’re unhappy, everything is just bad. I sense some hypocrisy.”

The 1996 European champion believes Germany could take a leaf out of Spanish or Dutch football’s book.

“There, people go to the stadium and want to see a beautiful football and not cheating and thrashings, as you often see in this country.

“I want more culture of play, because with the timid approach that many teams have, it will be damned difficult internationally.”
