Chelsea’s team today was full of interesting selections and tactical switches as Enzo Maresca looked to mix things up – and as per usual, the versatile Renato Veiga was at the heart of things.

The Portuguese defender was used essentially as a central defender today, while as part of a sort of hybrid back 3 / back 4 which changed according to the situation. After the game, his manager Enzo Maresca was asked to comment on the impact that the bargain buy from Basel last summer was making:

“I just said to Renato, he has played already as a centre-back, a full-back, holding midfielder, attacking midfielder. He has already played four or five positions. One of my first press conferences, I said that the reason why I really like and love Chelsea is because many players can be versatile,” Maresca explained.

“Today, in my idea, if they can play different positions, then it is better for the team and especially for the players. Today, if you just play one position, I don’t think it’s enough. You need to learn more positions. Renato, Malo [Gusto], they are playing in different positions and they are doing well.”

Versatile Veiga becoming instant hit with fans and manager

It’s not just Veiga’s versatility which is making him so popular with Blues fans. His tenacity and his physicality also are contributing towards him becoming something of a minor cult hero in the fanbase.

Just like Cesar Azpilicueta before him, there’s something instantly endearing about a player who comes in totally unheralded, with the grit and determination to make himself a niche in a crowded dressing room full of highly priced stars.

For as long as Veiga is willing to play wherever the coach wants, he will have an important role in this team.
