The Black Cats are searching for a new head coach following the decision to part ways with Michael Beale earlier this week.

He lasted just nine weeks in charge at the Stadium of Light, winning only four of his 12 games in the dugout in all competitions.

Mike Dodds is set to oversee the end of the Championship campaign, as the club looks to find Beale’s long-term successor.

Papszun was previously linked with the vacancy at Sunderland following the confirmation of Beale’s departure.

It has now been claimed that the Polish coach has turned down two concrete offers to make his return to management.

Papszun is currently out of work, having departed former club Raków Częstochowa at the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

He led the team to their first ever Polish league title prior to his departure, as well as two domestic cup triumphs in 2021 and 2022.

But it is now just Sunderland that have their sights set on Papszun, with clubs across Europe also taking a keen eye on him.

He was also offered a role with one of the clubs in Saudi Arabia, with the 49-year-old also confirming interest from England.

However, he did not specify if Sunderland were the club chasing his signature.

Sunderland manager search latest

A number of names have been linked with the vacancy at the Stadium of Light, including the likes of Steve Cooper and Paul Heckingbottom.

It has also been reported that Will Still is one of the preferred candidates, with the 31-year-old the only of these names currently working elsewhere.

Still is in charge at French side Reims, who are chasing European qualification in Ligue 1 this campaign.

We could yet be waiting a while more before a decision is made on Beale’s successor, with Dodds set to be in charge of the team until the summer.

Sunderland league position

Sunderland are aiming for a top six finish in the Championship this season.

Defeats to Huddersfield Town and Birmingham City in their last two games ended Beale’s reign as head coach, and saw the gap to the play-offs widen to seven points.

Dodds is back in charge, having previously overseen three games earlier this campaign prior to Beale’s appointment, winning two.

The 37-year-old’s fourth game as head coach this season will come against Swansea City on Saturday afternoon.

Papszun attracting interest elsewhere

If Sunderland want to agree a move to bring Papszun to the club in the summer, then they may want to iron out those details sooner rather than later.

There appears to be plenty of interest in his services after his success in the Polish league, which is no surprise.

His recent success makes him an appealing coach, and one that would be quite an interesting appointment at Sunderland.

He obviously lacks experience in English football, but the likes of Martí Cifuentes and Danny Rohl have proven that this isn’t necessarily the barrier to success that it was once seen as in the past.
