Manchester United attacker Marcus Rashford has refuted claims that the club gave up during their 7-0 thrashing at the hands of Liverpool on Sunday.
Many accused the Mancs of losing their fighting spirit, allowing the humiliation to continue. The first half was balanced, but the Merseyside club took the lead.
However, Liverpool scored an astounding six goals in the second half to hand their rivals their biggest defeat in over 90 years. It also brought a screeching halt to United’s unbeaten run.
Mohamed Salah scored a brace to become Liverpool’s all-time Premier League top scorer. Darwin Nunez and Cody Gakpo also netted doubles before Roberto Firmino finished the affair.
Many pundits and viewers accused Manchester United of giving up in the second half. Rashford was not having it when asked about the loss.
Speaking at a press conference today ahead of their Europa League tie against Real Betis tomorrow, the England international said via (the Daily Mail): “We didn’t give up, that’s nonsense. We were unorganised and communication was bad, that’s why we conceded the goals.
“But I believe everyone was trying to get back into the game that much, we came away from the principles too much. The forwards were trying to press as a unit, but we weren’t connected with the midfield.
“We were trying to get a grip of the game at 2-0 and 3-0, we were talking but we weren’t in agreement with what to do.
“It’s happened, we can learn from it and move on. I’m happy and grateful we have another game quickly because we have an opportunity to take a step forward.
Rashford, like any true leader, tried to take some responsibility for the incredulous result. He remarked about a chance he missed in the first half with the scores at 0-0.
The game was an off-day for the in-form 25-year-old who barely impacted the game. Rashford is in the best form of his career, breaking his record of goals for the club in a season.
He has scored 25 goals for United this season, providing seven assists. He has helped the club win the EFL Cup.
The United academy graduate stated that his form is down to staying fit and enjoying a good camp before preseason.
Rashford also defended teammate Bruno Fernandes. The Portuguese star and United captain faces allegations of poor attitude during the loss to Liverpool. He supported Fernandes, hailing him as a good leader and fantastic player.
