Manchester United beat Coventry City on penalties in the FA Cup semi-final to book their place in the final at Wembley in May, where they will face Manchester City.

United were comfortable for large parts of the game and were enjoying a comfortable 3-0 advantage until the 70th minute. Goals from Scott McTominay, Harry Maguire and Bruno Fernandes gave the team an extremely comfortable lead.

However, Coventry battled back and got their reward. Late strikes from Ellis Simms and Callum O’Hare – whose effort took a deflection – sent Erik ten Hag’s men into panic mode.

Mark Robins’ side shocked United when they were awarded a penalty in the 95th minute. Haji Wright made no mistake from the spot-kick to ensure proceedings spilt over into extra time. Neither side could find the back of the net and so, a penalty shootout was required to settle the affair.

Andre Onana saved one penalty and Coventry missed another to give Rasmus Hojlund the chance to send United through to the final with the final kick of the clash. The Dane converted his penalty to snatch an undeserved victory for the 20-time English champions.

One United player who embodied just how poor and woeful the team was against Coventry was Marcus Rashford.

The Englishman was below par and was one of the club’s weakest links. In attack, he seemed bereft of any ideas or creativity as he constantly ran into blind alleys.

On more than one occasion, Rashford embarked on a dribble, only to hit a Coventry defender and come out on the other side without the ball.

He lost the ball on a number of occasions but nothing came off for him. He was eventually taken off by Ten Hag and replaced by Amad Diallo, who showed much more than him.

When walking to the bench, Rashford was reportedly booed off by a section of United fans who made no secret of their displeasure with his overall display.

During the time he was on the pitch, the 26-year-old registered 72 touches of the ball.

He successfully found his teammates with 43 of the 51 passes he attempted, managing a personal pass completion rate of 84%. Just one of his passes was a key pass.

Rashford attempted two crosses but couldn’t find his target on either occasion. He tried to ping three long balls. Two of these were successful.

He registered two shots – one on target and the other required the Coventry goalkeeper to swing into action.

He embarked on three dribbles and completed two. The Carrington academy graduate missed one big chance that could have seen him get on the score sheet.

Rashford delved into seven ground duels. He won just three of these. He lost seven possession of the ball 17 times.

The forward has been largely underwhelming this season and this was the case once again vs. Coventry. He should no longer be a guaranteed starter, especially considering the likes of Diallo and Alejandro Garnacho do so much more when they get given opportunities.

Up next for United is Sheffield United at Old Trafford in just three days.
