Manchester United winger Marcus Rashford made his long-awaited return from injury at the weekend. The Wythenshawe-born star had missed all of United’s fixtures prior to the game at Leicester but marked his return to action with a goal, even though it turned out to be to no avail.

The 23-year-old was one of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s most used players last season and was rarely rested, despite playing with at least one injury for the majority of the season.

Rashford being the first name on the teamsheet isn’t merely a sentimental choice, as some would have you believe. Rashford has scored 20 or more goals in back-to-back seasons, the only player at the club to do so in the last two campaigns.

Furthermore, he has scored over 100 goals at senior level at the tender age of 23. In Rashford, Solskjaer will be welcoming back a serial point-scorer into a side struggling for rhythm. Even when cohesion is at its lowest, Rashford’s ability to crush the run of play with his menacing runs is a deadly weapon.

That’s what he saw at the weekend. Victor Lindelof, who showed why he is United’s best ball-playing centre-back once again, picked Rashford out when he made his trademark diagonal run. No mistake was made from the forward as he clawed his side back into the game.

It’s a tactic Solskjaer used often last season and in games against Sheffield United and Granada specifically, they also ended in goals.

The Norwegian’s side is often criticised for its lack of identity or style but sometimes it doesn’t have to be harder than just having Marcus Rashford in your side.
