Marcus Rashford is continuing his fight against child food poverty despite government MPs rejecting his bid to extend free school meals.

Rashford grew up using the free school meals program and has voiced his concerns during the ongoing pandemic with more children than ever going hungry.

MPs rejected a Labour motion to extend free school meals over the school holidays until Easter 2021 by 322 votes to 261 – a majority of 61.

After the vote, he shared a lengthy message on Twitter.

A significant number of children are going to bed tonight not only hungry but feeling like they do not matter We must stop stigmatising, judging and pointing fingers. Our views are being clouded by political affiliation. This is not politics, this is humanity.

But the Manchester United forward – despite raising upwards of £20m for charity – visited a foodbank on Friday to offer help creating packages.

The 22-year-old also used his Twitter account with 3.6 million followers to promote restaurants offering free meals from their own pockets.

People across the country are donating and providing whatever they can during these tough times, with Rashford deserving credit for his leadership on a nationwide issue.
