As you may have noticed in recent matches, Chelsea wing back Marcos Alonso has not been ‘taking the knee’ before games like his team mates have been.

Taking the knee is seen as a stand against racism and abuse of all types, and it is something that came in deep into last season in football.

As most of the players do say, it is a personal choice for them to do so, and a personal choice for them not to do so, and Alonso chooses to stand up against racism in other ways, as explained by the player himself yesterday on the Chelsea website.

Alonso is fully committed to fighting discrimination, but prefers to do so by highlighting the football-specific anti-racism campaigns like the Premier League’s No Room For Racism, or UEFA’s No To Racism, at games.

As he explains here below to the Blues website…

“I am fully against racism and I’m against every type of discrimination and I just prefer to put my finger to the badge where it says No To Racism, like they do in some other sports and football in other countries. I prefer to do it this way and, of course, to say very clearly that I am against racism and I respect everybody.

“I just prefer to do it this way, it’s my way to do it, and maybe I think it’s losing a bit of strength the other way. So I just prefer to do it this way and to show I am fully supportive of fighting against racism.

“For now I prefer to point to the sleeve and that’s what I will do.”
