Barcelona have announced that defender Marcos Alonso has signed a new contract keeping him at the club until 2024.

Alonso joined the Blaugranas last summer after falling out of favour at Chelsea, with Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang moving in the other direction.

However, he only signed a one-year deal with Barca, with the club in a pickle with their finances.

Barca wanted to offer a three-year contract, but their problems with the Financial Fair Play regulations meant they could only offer a one-year deal.

The former Fiorentina man endured a difficult start to life in Spain but has since found his feet and established himself as a regular in Xavi Hernandez’s side.

The Spanish left-back has played 19 games across all competitions for the Catalan giants this season, chipping in with two goals.

His versatility has also caught the eye this term, with the defender slotting in at centre-back and performing at the highest level amid the injury crisis at the club.

A new deal was always on the horizon, with the club keen to keep him beyond next summer, and despite their reduced salary budget, they have been able to reach a deal with Alonso.

Barca have slowly picked up from their financial crisis by activating levers and sanctioning outgoing deals, but they are far from done with the drama.

The Blaugranas still want to strengthen their squad his month, but their salary budget will not allow for any incoming deals despite selling Memphis Depay to rivals Atletico Madrid.

La Liga have refused Barca from increasing their salary budget by 15%, insisting that the club have since spent 100% of the funds raised from their levers into their budget.

The financial cat-and-mouse between both sides is set to drag on, with Barca planning to summon La Liga to court over the case.

The club have announced Alonso’s contract renewal, but it remains to be seen if it will be recognised by the league’s governing body.
