Die Schwarzgelben employed a diamond formation, with Mahmoud Dahoud at the base, Jude Bellingham and Giovani Reyna either side, and Marco Reus at the apex behind a front two of Erling Haaland and Steffen Tigges.

Despite the comfortable win over lower league opposition, Rose downplayed the signifance of the formation.

“The diamond is not set at all,” the former Borussia Mönchengladbach boss said.

“I have the feeling that the guys are comfortable with it at the moment. We have a lot of good footballers who fit into this basic structure.

“Against a chain of three with a diamond, there is of course always the risk of getting stuck. Actually, when central defenders like Mats [Hummels], Emre [Can] and [Dan-Axel] Zagadou come back, we will want to play back three because that is also a system with which we are able to apply pressure.”
