Marco Reus spoke to reporters after a disappointing performance at the Revierderby on Saturday. The 30-year-old was very self-critical.

What do you make of the draw?

Reus: “Unfortunately, we only take one point home. We were riding our luck in a couple of situations when Schalke hit the crossbar and the post. I have to clearly say that we didn’t invest enough upfront until the 70th minute. We woke up far too late but then we saw that we could create danger. But we simply didn’t do enough overall. We mustn’t be happy with that. The only positive was that we didn’t concede.”

Why are BVB struggling so much right now?

“We’re out of form individually and collectively. The only way to get out of that hole is with hard work. We need more courage, more confidence in ourselves, and more urgency in our game. Then it’ll improve.”

Was it the primary target to keep a clean sheet?

“Not necessarily, we wanted to attack. Currently, it’s extremely valuable in our situation when we’re stable at the back because we always feel that we can make something happen upfront. Even though we are struggling and have a hard time creating chances. Today we didn’t move enough. We have to quickly show a different attitude and especially more courage.

You were lucky to walk away from Sané’s foul

“You could see what happened there, right? He also hits the ball. If he doesn’t, then I have a very loose ankle. Luckily nothing happened. It’s a pity because it was a good opportunity on the counter.”

Gladbach will also press high in Wednesday’s upcoming cup match. How do you have to improve your movement then?

“We have to play as we did in the Bundesliga match last Saturday. We have to improve our spacing and play with more courage. But it’s not easy for us at the moment because we’re lacking the easiness. It is what it is. We have to keep working hard and force our luck. Obviously, wins help us more to lift is up than a scoreless draw void of a good performance.”

Today, there were a lot of grave technical errors. How do you explain that?

“It’s true, I had a two, three situations where I [miscontrol the ball]. Which is a pity, because Jadon Sancho had broken through on the left side in one situation. There are too many situations, where we take too long to pick out the pass and then run into trouble trying to dribble our way through. We’re working on it but maybe we just have to get through this phase somehow.”

There’s a lot of noise around the club. Are you aware of that or does it stay outside of the team?

“The media landscape is so huge that it will obviously reach us. We have to stick together as a team in good and in bad times. We have to remain self-critical internally and mustn’t be irritated from whatever comes from the outside. In the end, we influence the coverage by how we perform on the pitch.”
