Borussia Dortmund’s 1-0 win in the Revierderby over FC Schalke was tarnished by team captain Marco Reus suffering an ankle injury.
“Thank you for your get well wishes,” the 33-year-old posted on his Instagram feed. Reus had to be carried off the field on a stretcher after he badly twisted his ankle in a challenge with Schalke midfielder Florian Flick, adding: “I will be back soon! Congratulations to the team. I will never give up!”

It is still unclear how long the ankle injury will sideline the midfielder, as BVB head coach Edin Terzic explained at the news conference after the game: “The doctor said that there’s ligament damage, but it’s too early to say how severe it is. It’s a pity because Marco was in a great form, was in top shape. He had already suffered so many setbacks in his career. We were hoping that he would be free of injuries now – especially in a World Cup year. We just hope that he won’t miss for too long and that it’s less severe than it looked.”
