Borussia Dortmund have dismissed speculation that they are considering replacing Marco Reus as captain.

The 31-year-old attacker has been sidelined since suffering an adductor injury in the DFB Pokal exit to Werder Bremen in early February.

Reus played no part in BVB’s league campaign once it restarted after the Covid-19 shutdown, and there remains no date fixed for when the veteran is expected to return to action.

That led to a report in Bild that suggested the Germany international could lose the armband in Lucien Favre’s team.

However, Dortmund’s sporting director Michael Zorc rubbished the idea that Mats Hummels would be taking over as skipper.

“Marco is and remains our captain. That goes without saying for Borussia Dortmund,” Zorc said.

Speaking about the captain’s injury, Zorc explained: “Unfortunately, the tendon is still inflamed. He cannot train with the team yet.

“It is difficult to make a forecast over time. This is the case with tendon injuries in the adductor area.”

The Dortmund squad reported for testing and initial training on Saturday ahead of the planned start of the 2020/21 Bundesliga season on 18 September.
