Borussia Dortmund received a massive boost on Friday when it was announced that captain Marco Reus would be ready to face Eredivisie side Sparta Rotterdam in Dortmund’s final pre-season match of the summer on Monday.

Reus last appeared for the German giants seven months ago in their DFB-Pokal round-of-16 defeat to Werder Bremen, with a nagging groin injury keeping him out of action.

Though Reus reaggravated the injury in late July, the 31-year-old is now ready to have yet another outstanding Bundesliga campaign.

“Marco Reus will play in the friendly against Sparta Rotterdam on Monday,” says Sebastian Kehl, head of first-team football.

“He has been training very well over the past two or three weeks. Having had a difficult time in the summer, he is making a positive impression at the moment.

“He will play in the friendly against Rotterdam on Monday. Of course, we are delighted because our captain has been out for a long time.

“He is happy to be back on the pitch with the team. He can do it all, but will still have play catch-up for a few more training sessions. That’s normal after such a long time.

“With Marco, there were lots of ups and downs – we tried a lot of things. Sometimes with injuries, it doesn’t always go one way and things also take time. We had to take that time.

“We would have liked to have him with us earlier – even last season. But the key thing for us and him will be that he stays healthy, has fun, can train properly and that he can get back into the stadium.”

Kehl also provided an injury update on Dan-Axel Zagadou, who did not have to undergo surgery after suffering a knee injury.

“He’s still struggling with a knee injury and will be out for a little while longer. It’s annoying that the lateral ligament injury is keeping him out.

“It’s difficult to say exactly, but it will take a few weeks.”

Dortmund’s season kicks off on Monday, 14 September in the first round of the DFB-Pokal against 3. Liga side MSV Duisburg.
