Borussia Dortmund captain Marco Reus has signed a new one-year deal to remain at the Westfalenstadion, the club have announced.
The 33-year-old’s previous contract was set to expire at the end of the current campaign but he has now inked an extension until the summer of 2024.
Bild also report that the new terms will also see Reus take a significant pay cut to stay with the Bundesliga leaders.
The Germany international’s prior deal saw him earn €12 million per season but he is now reportedly set to take home close to €7m for the 2023/24 campaign, inclusive of bonuses.
“As a team, we – just like all of our fans –have a big goal on our minds right now which our full focus is on: we want to become German champions,” said Reus.
“But beyond that, I still really want to do my best for the club I’ve spent over half my life with. There’s still nothing better for me than scoring goals in front of the best fans in the world in the most beautiful stadium in the world and celebrating victories together.
“That’s why I’m happy I’ve extended my contract for another year, because I’ve always said there’s no other club I’d prefer to play for over BVB in my career.”
In addition, the extension also gives Reus an opportunity to become BVB’s all-time record scorer.
He is currently second in those standings, trailing Alfred Preißler by 16 goals.
