Marco Reus admitted feeling a degree of ambivalence after Borussia Dortmund ended their Bundesliga season with a comfortable win over Bayer Leverkusen.
Sandwiched between a brace of goals from Erling Haaland, Reus scored directly from a free-kick to bring his career total of league goals to 99.
However, the attacker will get the chance to add to his tally next season, unlike the other performers taking their final bow at Signal Iduna Park.
“We’ve had many emotional moments throughout the entire day and especially at the end,” Reus told Sky Deutschland.
“With Łukasz [Piszczek], Lars [Bender], Sven [Bender] and also (referee) Manuel Gräfe, who are all ending their careers today.
“We’re obviously delighted that we managed to win the game. Unfortunately, a few players who have made an incredible impact on their clubs in the Bundesliga are leaving. That obviously does make you a little sad.”
Reus will turn 32 at the end of this month, a factor that was key in his choice to withdraw from consideration for the Germany squad for the upcoming Euro 2020 tournament.
“It wasn’t an easy decision for me to say no to the European Championships. But it was a decision I considered for a long time,” Reus said.
“I’m now looking forward to a bit of rest – and then it will all start up again in a few weeks.”
Wolfsburg’s defeat at Mainz means that Dortmund finish the season in third place, just a point behind runners up RB Leipzig.
