Marco Borriello recounts Roma spell, labels Olimpico “among the best in Europe” | OneFootball

Former Roma, Juventus, and Milan striker Marco Borriello reflected on his time in the Italian capital and commented on his strong relationship with then vice-captain Daniele De Rossi.

Borriello joined the Giallorossi from Milan in the summer of 2010 and initially had an important role within the team. However, that would eventually wane and he’d go on to make multiple loan spells before permanently leaving in 2015.

“I was never a ‘bandiera’ during my time, I changed clubs every year or two which was demanding,” he told Serie A Radio.

“On top of that, you’re considered disloyal by many because you’re constantly on the move, but quite often it wasn’t my fault. For example, this was the case when I was with Roma from the ages of 28 to 33. I arrived in the capital during an ownership switch and the priorities changed.”

He continued, “So I went out on loan every year and couldn’t find continuity on or off the pitch. My first six months in Rome were wonderful, I scored a lot of goals but then everything changed once there was a new manager and president.”

Despite the limited success on the field, Borriello didn’t mince words when asked about the Stadio Olimpico.

“The Olimpico is one of the most exciting stadiums to experience. When you see all the yellow and red…for me, it’s among the most beautiful (stadiums) in all of Europe.”

Finally, Borriello recalled his close ties to former Roma midfielder and captain Daniele De Rossi.

“He and I already had a good relationship thanks to the time we spent together climbing the ranks with the Italian national team,” said the former striker.

“As soon as I signed for Roma, he messaged me saying ‘Let’s go win’. I was ready.”
