Despite completing a sensational double over Napoli, Marco Baroni doesn’t want his players to be carried away, preferring to avoid any Scudetto talk.
The two sides had locked horns at the Stadio Olimpico on Thursday when Tijjani Noslin’s hat-trick sent the Biancocelesti to the Coppa Italia quarter-final. Three days later, Gustav Isaksen’s late strike was the solitary difference in the Serie A showdown held at the Maradona Stadium.
Lazio are now only two points away from new league leaders Atalanta, so Baroni was asked about his team’s title hopes in the post-match press conference (via La Lazio Siamo Noi). Nevertheless, the 61-year-old urged his men to take it one step at a time
There is still a long way to go. I am used to looking at the top when I start, but then I have to look at every step on the way, otherwise I’d fall flat. We can see the summit, but now we have to find the road to reach it. So why do I have to put this unecessary pressure on the team? We are strong and we work hard so we must create our own path to try to stay with the best at this moment, as the table shows.
The Lazio boss expects Matias Vecino to return from injury against Ajax in mid-week, while providing reassuring updates on Alessio Romagnoli who was forced to leave the pitch with a slight knock.
We should regain Vecino for the trip to Amsterdam, but we’ll see. Rovella will be back from suspension. Romagnoli will be available, he felt a tingling sensation after the tackle but I’m otimisitic. Pellegrini was tired so I didn’t want to take any risks and we decided to leave him at home. He’ll play against Ajax.
Baroni also revealed how he’s working to improve the club’s young contingent while offering advice to the likes of Isaksen and Fisayo Dele-Bashiru.
View publisher imprintI’m happy to work with these guys, they’re good, I give them opportunities and they work hard to repay my trust. I work on everyone, especially those who can still evolve. Dele-Bashiru has great potential, it’s clear that he has to find the right match rhythm. He has the legs, the physicality and the quality, but he needs the head. It’s not easy to move from a different league to Serie A where you can’t make any mistakes. I’m not surprised, neither by TJ [Noslin], nor by Gustva [Isaksen] to whom I said that he has to find the joy of playing. He has to free his head. I saw that this team needs to be launched, because it has qualities, also with the right unscrupulousness and not with arrogance.
