Marco Asensio was absolutely fuming after not being substituted on in Real Madrid’s La Liga clash against Real Mallorca on Sunday afternoon.
The Spaniard has had a frustrating start to the 2022/23 campaign.
Prior to today’s match, he had been named on the bench for each of Real’s six matches to start the season.
He had been subbed in just two of those games and had played a total of just 19 minutes.
The 26-year-old was named on the bench yet again in the match against Mallorca at Santiago Bernabeu.
Carlo Ancelotti decided against using him once again on Sunday and Asensio was not happy at all.
In the 70th minute, after Ancelotti decided to send on Eduardo Camavinga and Dani Carvajal instead of him, Asensio snapped.
Asensio launched his bib away, kicked the floor and then slammed a bottle down in frustration.
A close up also showed him looking rather unimpressed as he sat on the bench,
Asensio has now played just 19 minutes in Real’s last nine competitive games. He has been an unused substitute in seven of them.
Ancelotti was well aware of Asensio’s actions and was asked about them after the game.
He said, per AS: “Asensio is angry and it’s normal – if he gets angry it’s because he wants to play and I take that into account. He’s an important player.”
Real won the game 4-1, with Federico Valverde, Vinicius Jr, Rodrygo and Antonio Rudiger all on target for Los Blancos.
Valverde’s goal was the pick of the bunch. He gave his side the lead in first-half stoppage time with a superb solo goal.
The Uruguayan picked up the ball in his own half, drove to the edge of Mallorca’s box and then fired a left-footed strike into the top corner.
Real have maintained their 100% record to start the season and have gone back above Barcelona to the summit of La Liga.
Asensio will be hoping to get some minutes when Real host RB Leipzig for their Champions League match on Wednesday.
