Chivas started their Liga MX season in style with an emphatic victory over Mazatlán FC, but manager Marcelo Leaño urged fans and players to not get ahead of themselves.
Three first-half goals from Angel Zaldivar, Alan Torres and Alexis Vega, all scored after the 44th minute, settled the encounter. However, according to Leaño, the match could have been a lot closer.
“We played well against a great team who have been doing good things themselves,” the 34-year old said. “It’s one of those game where the scoreline doesn’t quite represent how the game went.
“I am proud of the character the team showed against a side who are very solid defensively.
“We had be patient and try and open them up but in the first half we had two other very clear opportunities and we weren’t able to convert.”
A lack of attacking impetus cost Chivas last season, who needed a late run of form to make it into the Liguilla, and Leano is looking for his team to build on this result against Pachuca next week.
Leano also took a moment to acknowledge the importance of fan support.
“For people to feel represented… that’s what we want to achieve,” he said. “We understand that this is a show for the fans. We will continue to work hard to impress them.”
Torres’ incredible goal was his very first as a professional, something he admitted gave him a great sense of pride.
