Inter midfielder Marcelo Brozovic will return to the Nerazzurri’s starting eleven for this weekend’s Serie A match against Fiorentina.
This according to Italian broadcaster Sky Sport Italia, via FCInterNews, who report that the 30-year-old is fully fit and will certainly start in Saturday’s match against La Viola.
After having come into this season as one of the most important first-choice starters at Inter, Brozovic’s status at the club has changed significantly in the past twelve months or so.
The emergence of Hakan Calhanoglu as a starting quality option in the deep-lying playmaker position whilst the Croat was injured, combined with Brozovic’s somewhat inconsistent form since he’s returned from injury mean that he is far from a guaranteed starter at this stage.
However, given that Calhanoglu is currently injured and will be out for at least week or two whilst he recovers from a thigh strain, Brozovic should get an opportunity to assert his quality in Saturday’s match.
Whilst Kristjan Asllani is also an option in the regista position and there could even be other possible options to switch the midfield around including playing Nicolo Barella or Henrikh Mkhitaryan deeper in the midfield trio, there is little doubt that it will be Brozovic who starts.
Even despite the fact that Brozovic has not been considered to have been at his best during the past few months since returning from a calf injury picked up after the World Cup, the 30-year-old’s ability is hardly in question.
The Croat had been one of Inter’s most vital performers throughout much of last season.
In fact, in the three matches that Inter were without Brozovic due to injury or suspension last campaign, they dropped points on all three occasions as they lost to Sassuolo and drew against Fiorentina and Torino.
However, Brozovic has been strongly linked with a summer exit as he has lost his guaranteed starting place this season, whilst there have been reports of a rift behind the scenes between the midfielder and Inter.
