Crystal Palace’s decision to block Marc Guéhi’s £35m switch to Liverpool has caused shockwaves at Selhurst Park and beyond. According to a report from Ed Aarons of The Guardian, the England international was “extremely unhappy” after the transfer collapsed on deadline day, with Palace manager Oliver Glasner stepping in to stop the deal by threatening to resign.
Chairman Steve Parish had initially accepted Liverpool’s offer just hours before the deadline. Yet Glasner made his stance clear, arguing there was no time to secure a replacement and warning he would walk away if Guéhi was sold. As Aarons reported: “Parish changed his mind at the last minute after his manager … said he would walk out if the deal went through.”

That decision left Guéhi stunned. He had already completed part of his medical, and even a farewell video saying “Thank you Skip” had been signed off by the club. A private jet had been prepared to fly him to Merseyside.
The report suggests Guéhi is now questioning his role as Palace captain, such is his frustration with the U-turn. Unlike Alexander Isak, who “effectively went on strike” to force a move, Guéhi had continued playing in good faith throughout the summer speculation. That contrast reportedly adds to his sense of betrayal.
Teammates are also said to be disappointed at how the deal collapsed, with Liverpool likely to revisit their interest in January.
Palace insist Guéhi remains central to their plans, but the situation leaves both player and club in a delicate position. Overseas clubs including Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus are already monitoring developments. Should Guéhi’s discontent deepen, the risk of losing him on a free transfer next summer grows significantly.
From a Crystal Palace fan’s perspective, this saga raises real concerns about the club’s direction. On one hand, supporters understand Glasner’s argument – selling a key defender with no time to replace him could have left Palace vulnerable. Glasner has built much of his tactical structure around defensive stability, and losing his captain at the final hour would have undermined that.
Yet the manner in which this deal fell apart is troubling. To see a farewell video leak and a medical half-completed only for the club to pull back feels chaotic. Fans might question why Palace allowed negotiations to progress so far if they were not truly prepared to sanction the sale. It risks damaging trust, both with Guéhi and within the squad.
Guéhi has always been seen as a model professional, never pushing for a move and continuing to perform at a high level. That makes his disappointment understandable. For a player in his prime, the chance to join Liverpool – with Champions League football and a clear pathway to trophies – is not something that comes around often.
From the terraces, there’s also unease about the longer-term picture. Guéhi could sign a pre-contract with an overseas club in January, which would see Palace lose a valuable asset for nothing. Supporters will be hoping the board find a resolution that balances ambition with stability. Keeping Glasner happy is vital, but so is respecting a player who has given everything for the shirt.
