Manchester United are set to bring in Paris Saint-Germain’s Marc Armstrong to Old Trafford.

United officials spent a significant part of the summer negotiating a deal for Manuel Ugarte with PSG.

In the final days of the window, the club’s technical director Jason Wilcox had to head to Paris to finalise the agreement for Ugarte, who eventually joined United in a deal worth an initial £42m plus a further £8.4m in add-ons.

Interestingly, it appears key figures at United also set their sights on another PSG figure this summer, albeit to strengthen their operations behind the scenes rather than on the pitch.

According to L’Équipe, Armstrong, who is PSG’s general director of revenues, will depart the Parc des Princes alongside Nicolas Arndt, head of ticketing.

The French newspaper adds Armstrong is “set to join” Jean-Claude Blanc at United.

United director Blanc, who was recently appointed to the boards of the European Club Association (ECA) and UEFA’s Club Competition (UCC) Board of Administration, spent 11 years at PSG before joining Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s INEOS Sport.

Armstrong, who had previously worked with the NBA, moved to the French capital in 2018.

Ever since their arrival, the INEOS leadership has put a strong emphasis on strengthening the club’s football structure through various high-profile appointments.

In less than 11 months, Sir Dave Brailsford and company have managed to attract Omar Berrada (ex-Manchester City), Dan Ashworth (ex-Newcastle United), and Wilcox (ex-Southampton) to join the new project at the Theatre of Dreams.

The trio spearheaded the Red Devils’ transfer business during the recently concluded summer window, and handed Erik ten Hag five new signings, including Ugarte.

It will be interesting to see what role Armstrong will have at United once his appointment is announced.
