Manuel Neuer’s status as one of the greatest goalkeepers in football history is already safely secured.

The Bayern Munich and Germany shot-stopper’s name will sit alongside the likes of Lev Yashin, Peter Schmeichel and Gianluigi Buffon in the pantheon of all-time greats when he hangs up his gloves.

Neuer, who turns 36 this month, is often credited for revolutionising goalkeeping. The ultimate sweeper-keeper, it’s not uncommon to see Neuer charging out of his penalty area, even in the biggest matches.

This audacious approach to goalkeeping has cost him at times, but there’s absolutely no doubt that he makes the right call more often than not.

Neuer played the full 90 minutes as Bundesliga leaders Bayern sealed an emphatic 4-0 victory over Union Berlin on Saturday.

Neuer also broke a prestigious record in the process, overtaking former Bayern goalkeeper Oliver Kahn’s record as the player with the most Bundesliga wins to their name.

This was the 311th Bundesliga win of Neuer’s remarkable career.

“It’s a fabled record. Also when comparing the number of games played, it’s extraordinary,” Julian Nagelsmann said of the new record, per Bayern’s official website, before adding: “But I don’t think he’s anywhere near finished with that number — I hope.”

Neuer shows off his sweeper-keeper qualities once again

And on his record-breaking appearance, Neuer couldn’t resist going full Manuel Neuer towards the end of the match.

Union Berlin threatened to net a consolation in the 86th minute but Neuer was hand to clear the danger after rushing out of his box.

He then found himself 40 yards from his goal-line and decided to spray a beautiful pass out to the left wing that even Paul Scholes or Xabi Alonso would have been proud of.

No goalkeeper makes it look cooler than Neuer.
