The FLYERALARM Frauen-Bundesliga side announced the deal via a post on their official club website last night. It is understood that Edwards has been tracked by SGS Essen for more than two years but both parties have had to be patient in making the move happen.
Edwards has starred for the Manchester United WSL Academy League side but has only made the bench at senior level. The player was sent out on loan to Blackburn Rovers to gain some senior experience in 2020/2021 and she scored two goals in 14 appearances for the Lancashire club in the Barclays Women’s Championship. Edwards was back playing for Manchester United in the WSL Academy League last season and she netted 31 goals in just 21 games.
After finally securing the services of Edwards, SGS Essen boss Markus Högner said “Essen is the logical next step for Maria. She would have come to us sooner but unfortunately, Coronavirus put a spanner in the works. I am all the happier that after two years of being in contact, it finally worked out.
“With Maria right at the forefront, we have new alternatives in our game. She has already scored many goals in the Under-21s at Manchester United and I am convinced that she will be equally as successful with us.”
Edwards joins Manchester United teammate Ivana Fuso in moving to Germany this summer. The forward joined Bayer 04 Leverkusen on a season-long loan deal last month.
