Here, we look at how each of Manchester United’s summer signings fared in their debut season.

Jadon Sancho 6/10

The £73-million summer signing was supposed to be the star addition to Manchester United’s squad, but it would be an understatement to say that the 21-year-old winger has failed to live up to the expectations. Sancho bagged only six-goal contributions (three goals and three assists) in twenty-nine Premier League appearances this season, confirming his difficulty adapting to standards in the English top-flight.

Needless to say, the German international will have to improve upon his performances to secure a regular sport in Erik Ten Hag’s starting eleven.

“Whenever I see him train, he’s showing that he’s one of the best players in the training sessions,” Ralf Rangnick said.

“But now it’s about transferring that to when he’s playing, and showing the same kind of level and performance on the pitch.”

“It’s difficult to say. I think it’s a different league, it’s a different competition. It’s more physical.”

“Now he’s playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world. I think it’s also got to do with a lot of different things up here in his head. It’s a difference if you come as an 18-year-old, unknown, a talented English boy to Borussia Dortmund. From then on, you can only improve; you can only make a success out of that. The level of expectation was a lot lower compared to the situation when, at the age of 21, you come to a club like Manchester United for a high transfer fee, with a high level of expectation.”

Raphael Varane 5/10

Having missed sixteen games with four injuries, the former Real Madrid defender has had a nightmarish debut season at the Theatre of Dreams.

For all the times when he was on the pitch, things were not very kind to him either. Although Harry Maguire has been the primary recipient of criticism for Manchester United’s abysmal defensive performances this season, it would be unfair to say that the France centre-back was flawless in defence. In fact, the 4-times Champions League winner is having a tough time adapting to United’s structure.

Nonetheless, things could change for the better if Erik Ten Hag improves the overall stability of the team.

Cristiano Ronaldo 9/10

Twenty-four goals scored across all competitions in a dysfunctional Manchester United team in his debut season at the age of thirty-seven – Cristiano Ronaldo is probably the only Red Devil who came out of the season with his reputation unharmed. The Portuguese striker’s ability to deliver on the biggest stages is one of the few positives that can be taken from the disastrous season. If not overplayed, he still has the calibre to win matches on his own.

It would be exciting to see his role in Ten Hag’s system next season.

Tom Heaton N/A

The shot-stopper arrived on a free transfer from Aston Villa and played for just 22 minutes this season.
