Manchester United’s ins and outs after January transfer window

A look at Manchester United’s January business across the past four weeks.

Whilst the transfer window was less than hectic, three key positions were filled which have bolstered Erik ten Hag’s options for the second half of the season. It was also likely the last window under Glazer ownership, so things could look significantly different by the summer.

Ins:

Jack Butland – Goalkeeper from Crystal Palace (loan)

Butland was acquired to be a backup option to David de Gea after Newcastle United recalled Martin Dubravka early from his season-long loan at the beginning of January. The Slovakian made just two appearances for the club.

The Palace ‘keeper is yet to make his debut for the Reds, but could soon given United’s involvement in all cup competitions.

Wout Weghorst – Forward from Burnley (loan)

The Dutch striker has already netted his first United goal during last week’s Carabao Cup semi-final first leg against Nottingham Forest. He was a crucial addition as Cristiano Ronaldo mutually agreed to terminate his contract in November, and Anthony Martial sustained another injury that has kept him sidelined for several matches.

Marcel Sabitzer – Midfielder from Bayern Munich (loan)

An ankle injury to Christian Eriksen will keep the Dane sidelined until late March/early April. The news was announced yesterday and left supporters concerned at Ten Hag’s midfield options for the season, as United now face a packed schedule of fixtures with eight games to be played across February.

Ten Hag and the board acted quickly and efficiently in solving the issue; they contacted Bayern Munich and began talks with Sabitzer regarding a switch to Manchester. The 28-year-old was keen on working under the manager and fitting into the current project at Old Trafford.

He could make his debut on Saturday against Crystal Palace.

Outs:

Aside from Dubravka returning to Tyneside and Axel Tuanzebe completing a loan move to Stoke City, several youth players have departed on loan spells to help boost their development and progression into first-team football.
