With the football on hold at the moment, we’ve been thinking about who gets in Manchester United’s all-time XI.

Yesterday we completed our back four. Today we’re choosing the first of three midfielders.

Here are the nominees …

3rd – Paddy Crerand

The Glaswegian joined United from Celtic in 1963 and went on to make over 300 appearances for the club over an eight-year period.

Crerand was a tenacious, tough tackling midfielder who would win the ball back in midfield and lay it off to the more creative players, like George Best and Bobby Charlton.

He won two league titles, the FA Cup and the 1968 European Cup before his retirement in 1971.

2nd – David Beckham

One of the famous Class of ’92, Beckham became a superstar on and off the pitch during his time at United.

His incredible ability when it came to crossing and set-pieces saw him notch up 85 goals and 98 assists in 387 games for the club.

And his 13-year spell at Old Trafford was one of the most successful in United’s history as they romped to six Premier League titles, two FA Cups and the 1999 Champions League.

His departure to Real Madrid in 2003 is the reason he doesn’t quite make the all-time XI but make no mistake about it, Becks is a United legend.

And the winner is … Bobby Charlton

It was hard choosing a midfield for this team. Really hard.

But Sir Bobby was one of the first names on the team-sheet.

Charlton began his career at Old Trafford and went on to make 758 appearances over 17 years, putting him second on the all-time list.

A box-to-box midfielder with a fierce shot, he was one of the survivors of the 1958 Munich air disaster.

It took great courage to recover from that tragedy and he would go on to win three league titles, the FA Cup and the European Cup with United.

Charlton is not just one of United’s best ever but one of the finest footballers of all-time and in 1966 – the year he lifted the World Cup with England – he also won the Ballon d’Or.

Here’s how the team is looking so far …

GK: Peter Schmeichel RB: Gary Neville LB: Denis Irwin CB: Gary Pallister CB: Rio Ferdinand CM: Bobby Charlton

Check back tomorrow when we will be choosing the second midfielder!
