Manchester United have officially confirmed Teden Mengi has been added to their first-team squad after his profile was updated to the first-team section on the club website.

Some supporters were frustrated not to see Mengi, 18, used in Tuesday evening’s EFL Cup victory over Luton with the academy graduate an unused substitute in the 3-0 win.

But Mengi’s rise through the youth ranks into the first-team squad has been incredible and a testament to how highly-rated he is at the club.

The teenage centre-back made his debut for the Reds in last season’s Europa League round of 16 tie against LASK at Old Trafford and has been training with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side ever since.

Mengi’s promotion to the first-team means Solskjaer now has eight central defenders within his ranks at United.

However, plenty of these players should be moved on before the October 5 transfer deadline with Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo surely the first in the queue for the exit door.

Mengi, meanwhile, could make his first appearance of the season against either Brighton or Preston North End in the Carabao Cup fourth-round.
