Manchester United Women extended their lead at the top of the Women’s Super League with a victory away at Aston Villa on Saturday.
Lauren James went close to opening the scoring for United early in the first half but her left-footed effort went just wide of the post.
Ella Toone’s effort from range was then tipped over the bar by Villa goalkeeper Lisa Weiß.
United did make the breakthrough in the 25th minute when their high press won the ball back and Hayley Ladd fed Leah Galton for her second goal of the season.
Shania Hayles went close to an equaliser for Villa early in the second half when her effort looped up onto the crossbar.
Before James rattled the woodwork for United with a stunning strike at the other end.
Toone then made sure of the points for United when she made it 2-0 with a lob over the goalkeeper in the 89th minute.
That result means Casey Stoney’s side move four points ahead of Arsenal, who host Birmingham City on Sunday.
Villa remain second bottom of the table.
