The recent announcement by Manchester United that the club is up for sale sparked plenty of excitement amongst the fanbase.

The Glazer family have been heavily criticised throughout their time in charge and United fans will be delighted to see the back of them.

Given the lofty asking price, United will likely end up with owners more befitting of a club of their global stature.

With that in mind, we assess how the prospective takeover will impact the other big hitters in the Premier League.

Manchester City

One of the biggest frustrations for United fans in recent years has been seeing local rivals Manchester City win a ton of major silverware.

The takeover should allow United to compete with City on an equal footing and may even see them regain their status as Manchester’s top club.

If United can be successful on the field, their greater global pulling power could prove to be a thorn in City’s side over the coming years.

Liverpool

Liverpool fans have taken great delight in United’s demise over the past few seasons, despite their club failing to truly cash in on their rivals’ fall from grace.

The Reds have won a handful of trophies including the Premier League and Champions League, but they have been unable to dominate in the same way United did during their glory years.

The Glazers’ decision to sell United narrows the field of potential buyers for Liverpool, who are also up for sale, and they could be set for another barren spell.

Chelsea

We are yet to see how the Todd Boehly-led takeover of Chelsea will unfold, but the early signs have not been promising.

The club’s summer transfer business was underwhelming, and the jury is out on Graham Potter’s suitability for the managerial role.

United’s new owners will be eager to restore the club to its former glories, which will undoubtedly make things more difficult for the Blues hierarchy.

There are realistically three other clubs who hope to compete with United in the Premier League – Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal and Newcastle United.

The trio are all likely to be impacted by the United takeover, with none of them able to match the global appeal of the Red Devils.
