According to Fabrizio Romano, Manchester United were the favourites to sign Xavi Simons during the summer, before Paris Saint-Germain triggered their buy-back clause. Speaking in a YouTube video on Monday, Romano revealed that Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag was ‘really keen’ on bringing the 20-year-old Dutchman to the club.

In July, PSG triggered Xavi Simons’ €6m buy-back clause. The 20-year-old eventually decided to leave PSV and return to his former club. Almost immediately, the attacking midfielder was loaned out to RB Leipzig, where he has kicked off the Bundesliga season in superb style. The five-time Netherlands international has scored three goals and provided four assists in four games so far this season.

Manchester United were in ‘pole position’ to sign Xavi Simons if he had stayed at PSV. Unfortunately for the Premier League side, PSG triggered their incredibly low buy-back clause, and Simons opted for the return to the Parc des Princes before being loaned out.
